Living History & Lore

The Stories That Shaped East Texas

From steamboat booms and railroad standoffs to Bigfoot expeditions in the Piney Woods, explore what makes Jefferson legendary.

Chapter 01

Queen of the Bayou

The 19th-Century Steamboat Metropolis

In the mid-1800s, Jefferson was the second-largest port in Texas. Steamboats from New Orleans navigated the Red River and Caddo Lake through Big Cypress Bayou to deliver commerce and travelers to the Texas frontier.

Chapter 02

The Gould Standoff & The Atalanta

Railroad Magnate Legend

When railroad baron Jay Gould sought right-of-way, local riverport leaders refused. Gould famously declared grass would grow in the streets. Today, his lavish private palace railcar, the Atalanta, rests permanently in downtown Jefferson across from the Excelsior House.

Chapter 03

The Bigfoot Capital of Texas

Piney Woods Mysteries & Outdoor Legends

Surrounded by dense pine forests and the ancient cypress wetlands of Marion County, Jefferson is designated the Bigfoot Capital of Texas, hosting the annual Texas Bigfoot Conference and guided evening expeditions.
