Storied Haunts of Jefferson

The stories shared on the walks are rooted in real places. If you want to explore the history of these landmarks by daylight, or even stay inside them overnight, these are the key locations:

The Grove (1861)

Often cited as the most haunted house in Texas, this antebellum home has a documented record of unexplained happenings dating back to the 1880s. Its best-known apparition is the Lady in White, seen walking the porches and grounds. The home is a private residence, but guided tours are available by reservation.

The Excelsior House Hotel

Operating continuously since the 1850s, the Excelsior’s guest registry features Ulysses S. Grant, Oscar Wilde, and Steven Spielberg—who reportedly fled the hotel in the middle of the night after an encounter in the Jay Gould room. Keep an eye out for Diamond Bessie’s spirit or the headless man reported in the corridors.

The Kahn Hotel

Located at the corner of Austin and Vale, this saloon-era brick building is now a boutique hotel and a hotspot for paranormal logs. Guests frequently report footsteps in empty halls and moving objects, making it the perfect starting spot for the weekend ghost walk.

Tips for a Spooky Weekend

  • Book early: Peak season (especially the month of October) fills up weeks in advance. Book your tour tickets and lodging together.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: Jefferson’s historic brick sidewalks and unpaved alleys can be uneven and dark.
  • Plan your stay: Sleep where it haunts. Read our B&B comparison guide to check details on historic inns, or search directly on Find Your Stay to check rates and availability.
  • Prefer daylight history? Read the historic tours guide for museums, homes, and maps of markers across the National Register district.
